Calgary NWLRT Dalhousie Extension

Welcome to Dalhousie LRT extension page. This page features a brief history of the station and a summary of the Northwest LRT Feeder Bus Network for Dalhousie extension.

The Dalhousie LRT station was an overdue project. The extension was to take place in the mid-1990's. In fact a shopping centre was built and given the name Dalhousie Station in 1996. However at the time, building the real Dalhousie Station was not a priority for funding; therefore, the project was pushed back to 2001. In 2002 October the three interchanges needed along Crowchild Trail to facilitate LRT were completed. Shortly after that, construction of the 2.7 km of overhead electrified two way track and the actual Dalhousie Station began. Throughout 2003 track was laid, overhead wires erected, signals installed, LRT station built, Park N'Ride lot built, bus terminal built and exclusive ROW in the middle of Crowchild Trail built. The Dalhousie Station platform is the first platform built to accommodate 4 LRV cars in a consist. For more on construction progress please refer to the captions on the below photos.

With the opening of Dalhousie Station, major changes had to be made to the northwest LRT feeder bus network. A series of open houses in several N.W. communities were held in September and October 2002 to gather input on the network. A proposed network was setup in March 2003 and another series of open houses took place in April 2003. The feeder network was approved in July 2003 by the Transportation and then City Council in October 2003. The new network can be seen "http://www.calgarytransit.com/winter_service_revisions2003.html". Dalhousie is the 34th C-Train Station in Calgary and 23rd station outside of the downtown core. Also the 2.7km stretch from Brentwood to Dalhousie makes this the longest stretch without a station on the northwest line and one of the longest in the system. Dalhousie Station has a shopping mall and many apartments/condos nearby.

The official opening ceremony for Dalhousie Station took place on December 13th, 2003 at Dalhousie Station. The station opened to transit and transit users on December 15th, 2003.
