2005 Orion VII HEV Demo

In September 2006, Edmonton Transit System borrowed a Orion VII Hybrid from Orion Bus Industries for non-revenue service purposes. The same bus also found it's way to Calgary in June of 2007.

This bus has an Orion assigned fleet number of #7000 (Built August 2005) and was built to New York MTA specifications, though painted in a Toronto Transit Commission colors. Both transit authorities have bought large quantities of the Orion VII HEV.

This hybrid uses components from BAE is a series hybrid bus. Simply stated, this means the electric (battery) propulsion system and diesel motor are combined to provide power at all road speeds. Onboard computers assist in determining how much power input from either source is used. The diesel engine is a Cummins ISB. The energy storage for the electrical propulsion system is provided by BAE.
