New Flyer C40LF

Welcome to the New Flyer C40LF photo gallery. In 1998, Vancouver (Under BC Transit) took delivery of 25 New Flyer C40LF's, they were numbered 3283-3299, 3301-3308. The original powertrain for all 25 buses was a Detroit Diesel Series 50G (CNG) with a 3 speed Voith D863 automatic transmission. All 25 buses originally wore the "Clean Air Bus" livery first introduced on earlier CNG units, the 1995 New Flyer C40 buses. And like the C40 buses, these C40LF's have a very unique history.

Following the 2001 transit strike, Coast Mountain Bus Company parked all 25 units. High maintenance and operating costs of the CNG buses (including the 1995 C40's) led to this deicsion. Bus 3292 was pulled out of storage and loaned to Cummins/Westport who refitted the bus with a Cummins C+ Gas (CNG) engine. The bus was used as a demo unit for Cummins/Wesport, thus it did not operate for CMBC; however, this bus was returned to CMBC/Translink in mid-2005 with the powertrain refit still in place. At the same time the remaining 24 buses in storage returned to active service starting in mid-2005. 19 units were returned with their original powertrains (S50G/Voith D863) and eventually repainted into Translink "Sweep" livery. However, 6 units had their engines swapped out to Cummins C+ Gas engines. The first 4 were 3288, 3302, 3307 and 3308, these were part of a Hydrogen-CNG fuel testing program (HCNG). A fith unit, 3306 had it's Series 50G swapped with a Cummins C+ Gas engine, bus was not modified to run the HCNG fuel mixture. Bus 3290 kept its S50G engine, but has been refitted with Allison B400R5 transmission in place of its original Voith D863.

In 2009, the 19 of 25 buses that did not receive a Cummins C+ Gas engine and still retained the Series 50G engine underwent a conversion to being diesel buses. This conversion saw the removal of the CNG roof tanks, making the buses easy to identify from proper Vancouver D40LF models because the roof mounted air circulation units are missing from these convereted C40LF buses (instead they are in the rear of the bus as per factory specs.).

The original Clean Air Bus livery was replaced with the Translink "Sweep" when the buses returned to service in 2005. Some of the C40LF's have been refitted with Balios LED destination signs, in place of the original Luminator flipdot signs.
