New Flyer 2005 DE40LF Demo
In 2005, New Flyer introduced updated styling to it's product line of low floor buses. Among one of the buses that featured this new styling was a demo Diesel-Electric 40 foot low floor bus (DE40LF, V.I.N. 5FYH4FV105B027819).
This hybrid with components from GM-Allison is a parallel hybrid bus. Simply stated, this means the electric (battery) propulsion system provides power for initial acceleration while mid-speed/high-speed driving to be powered by the diesel engine. The diesel engine is a Cummins ISL280. The energy storage for the electrical propulsion system is provided by Allison-NiMH batteries and the control system for a dual drive (diesel-electric) system is provided by GM-Allison.
This bus was on display at the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) Trans-Expo 2005 in Vancouver, B.C. On it's return from Vancouver it made several promotional stops, including Edmonton, A.B. A tour and general media session was held at noon time on November 25, 2005.
In September 2006, this bus made a stop in Edmonton again as a demo unit, but with a set of frameless windows being retrofitted to the exterior of the bus.
