Edmonton Transit System NovaBus LFS Trial

From February 2nd to 11th, 2005, Edmonton Transit System (ETS) put a 2005 NovaBus LFS into revenue service on the Route 8 Abbotsfeild-Coliseum-Kingsway-Downtown-Millgate-Lakewood-Mill Woods route on run 8-08. This bus was a demo unit and is the third Nova LFS that ETS has brought into the city for evaluation purposes. The first was a 1998 or 1999 demo unit that was in Edmonton in early 1999. The second was former Translink (Vancouver) B7298 that was on demo in exchange for ETS #4100 for Vancouver to evaluate the Cummins C8.3/ISC engine. This demo unit had the fleet number #14401 assigned to it by NovaBus.

This Nova LFS was powered by a Cummins ISL280 diesel engine with a ZF 6HP552C automatic transmission. There are 38 seats on the bus laid out in a full low floor format. But the seats themselves are on a raised portion at the back. The bus has a kneeling and wheelchair ramp feature with two wheelchair positions. The structure of the bus is stainless steal, where the NFI D40LF is not. Also the engine noise of the ISL was significantly less overall when compared to ETS's 2004 NFI D40LF's which also have the Cummins ISL280 diesel engine. Although overall the bus was similar to a 2004 NFI D40LF in terms of ride quallity and passenger comfort.

Photo Captions- The front and rear views are arranged in the order they were taken. The first time I rode the bus was on February 8th, 2005. I waited at Kingsway Transit Centre for #14401 to arrive on Route 8 Mill Woods TC. As it pulled into Kingsway I took several photos (1, 2, 21). From there I boarded and took the long ride all the way to Mill Woods Transit Centre where I took many photos of 14401 during layover (3, 4, 5, 22, 23, 31, 32, 33, 34). I then boarded again and rode up to Millgate Transit Centre, I took two interior photos including the sensor operated door (35, 36). I then took two final photos of #14401 leaving Millgate (6, 7).
