The Retirement of C-Train Car 2010

On the morning of March 27th, 2002, car 2010 along with 2072 and 2075 were leaving downtown at around 9 AM. 2010, which was the lead car of the 3 car consist that had just left the 7th avenue transit mall and was headed northbound to its final destination, Brentwood, however, it didn't make it there. As the train began to cross 4th avenue SW, a 1/2 ton early 1980’s Chevrolet truck crossed the path of the train as the truck was attempting to make a turn onto the Louise bridge. The C-Train slammed into the truck that had crossed its path and sent the truck several meters up the track. The lead car, 2010 was lifted slightly into the air and fell back onto the ground. This violent jolt off the track cause one set of wheels (one of the train's trucks) to be ripped off the undercarriage that likely caused other damage. The impact between the train and truck flattened one side of the truck. The lead train suffered some front-end damage, which included some dents and a cracked front windshield. In the process of derailment, the lead car, 2010, took out several poles that were supporting electric wires that the C-Train system runs on. The other two presumably undamaged cars remained on the tracks and were taken away shortly after emergency crews arrived. Three passengers onboard the lead car suffered some minor injuries due to being thrown around on impact. The driver of the truck, a 38-year old male, suffered serious injuries but he recovered. The derailment would shutdown service between downtown and Loins Park on the Northwest line for about 20 hours. 2010 (the lead car) was separated so it could be hauled away on a flatbed truck. Both ends of the 2010 were taken away from the accident scene in the late evening. The downed lines were restored and the line opened up just in time for the morning rush hour. Police said that the bells and lights at the crossing were working at the time of the accident. However there is no gate or arm at that crossing.

The derailed and separated car was examined for a about a week by Calgary Transit and was officially written off or in other words retired. The damage sustained was beyond repair.

C-Train history was written on March 27th, 2002, car 2010 is the first and only LRV for Calgary Transit to be retired since the system opened in 1981. Car 2010 was one of the first cars that ran on the C-Train system. The Siemens Duwag U2 DC type car was commissioned on February 9th, 1981. The 21-year-old car was purchased in 1981 for $800 000 CDN. The wrecked LRV (still in two parts outside Anderson Garage) is now a parts source for the remaining fleet of the 84 U2’s. It's a shame that the first LRV to be retired was retired in this fashion.
