Flyer E901A/E902 Electirc Trolley Buses

As part of the program to replace the aging Brill trolley's, BC Transit/Metro Transit decided to purchase 245 E901A and E902 trolley buses in 1982 and 1983. These were the last trolleybuses that Flyer ever built. These two models are nearly identical except for a few minor differences in the chassis and frame. A 246th bus was an E901A, however it was the demonstrator unit and was later given back to Flyer. Around 2005, about 230 units were still in active service as the buses remained workhorses in the transit system despite their age. Many of the buses had been repainted several times. Many reamined in BC Transit colors till retirement and some were retired Translink's "Sweep" paint scheme. As the Flyer fleet of trolley buses continued to age and reliability declined, replacements were needed. In 2003, New Flyer Industries and Kiepe Electric won the bid for trolleybus replacements for the aging fleet of Flyer E901A/E902's. The bid was for 188 40ft. low floor trolleys and 40 60ft. articulated low floor trolleys with an option of 20 additional 40ft. low floor trolleys. By late 2006, production unit New Flyer E40LFR units had begin arriving, and by mid 2008, all of the new trolley buses were in service. This ultimately meant the end of the road for the Flyer E901A/E902 fleet, the last full day of service for these coaches was on April 18, 2008. A ceremonial last run was made on April 20, 2008. #2805 now belongs to TRAMS as part of the historical fleet. The end of the road in Canada may have come for these buses; however, 80 were sold to Mendoza, Argentina in 2008. The buses were loaded on at the Fraser Surrey Docks on October 31, 2008.
The Flyer buses used electric motors and traction equipment from General Electric.
